Crafted in the 10th-11th century AD, this lock key is a finely forged example, measuring 3 5/8" in length. The shank is swollen in the middle, with a ring butt that is incomplete. On the opposite side, it features an angled key bit, and it's in stable, excavated condition. Vikings, known for their active slave trade, often had slave dwellings in their households. By 1100, it's estimated that ten percent of Europe's population was enslaved.
